Before hopping in – Be informed about the weather. Sailing on a rough weather can make a huge difference in determining the success of your trip. Also, it is important to equip yourself with all the necessary clothing and gears for all the activities you plan to do. It is also important to assume cold water and weather to prevent risks of hypothermia.

Before leaving with the boat – Make sure that all connection from the dock is disconnected. You may also go around the cabins and check the rooms for any suspicious smell. Do not underestimate gas leaks and other toxic fumes. Also, make sure that your engine is in good condition and that you have ample supply of fuel for the whole itinerary. Checking around for loose wires and faulty sockets can also ensure basic safety.
You cannot predict when accidents may happen. Therefore, make sure that you have all the necessary safety equipment available inside the boat such as fire extinguishers, fire aid kit, and flares.

It is a basic protocol to test the engine and all other devices related to navigation whether they are working properly or not before leaving the dock. Check electronics such as plotter and radar if they are in perfect condition. You don’t want to run risks while on water. Get your chart ready and handy all the time and have other members of the group become part of the crew. Each crew member must have a specific role to play and make sure they play their roles very well in order to keep things at hand. Other group members who are not member of the crew must be advised to stay out of the way and let the gang do their thing. Not only that, it is also important to make sure they are comfortable and at ease.

While onboard – Once everyone is onboard, make sure everything is settled. Personal items must be kept away under the owner’s reliability. Brief yourselves on how to handle tough situations and what to do when emergencies arise. Every little knowledge you provide with your group can help make everyone’s experience of sailing Whitsundays successful.
